JAMES BLAND RECEIVES PASSING THE TORCH AWARD

On March 14, 2025, Emmy-nominated filmmaker James Bland was honored with the Passing the Torch Award during the 3rd annual Passing the Torch Awards, hosted by Better Brothers Los Angeles (BBLA) at The Aster in Hollywood. The event celebrates rising Black LGBTQ+ leaders across arts, business, and advocacy.

Bland, creator of the acclaimed series Giants, was recognized for his powerful storytelling and commitment to representation in film and television. He was honored alongside fellow changemakers: Preston Mitchum, a leading voice in policy and advocacy; Amber Whittington, creator and activist behind “Amber’s Closet”; and Terrell Grice, a genre-defying music and media creator.

The Passing the Torch Awards are part of the Truth Awards Weekend, which continued March 15 with the 11th Annual Truth Awards at the Beverly Hilton. Honorees included Lee Daniels (Lifetime Achievement Award), Wendy Raquel Robinson (Ally Award), Abbott Elementary writer Brittani Nichols (Breakout Star Award), and stylist Larry Sims (Business Leadership Award).

Better Brothers Los Angeles is a nonprofit that supports and uplifts Black LGBTQ+ individuals through scholarships, mentorship, and cultural programming. Both award events aim to amplify Black LGBTQ+ voices and celebrate their impact.
